The Stage Was At The East End Of The Building, The Entrance On The West Side Of The Building On Notre Dame Avenue. The Fire Was Reported About 10:30am And A Few Minutes Later Firemen From Fire Halls #1 And #2 Were On The Scene. Chief Buchanan Arrived And Shortly After The Roof Fell In. Realizing The Building Was Doomed, He Ordered His Men Outside And They Complied Fighting The Flames All The Way When The Front Wall Collapsed Killing Three Firemen And Trapping Others In The Vestibule And Foyer. By This Time 100 Firemen Were On The Scene And Strenuous Effort Was Made To Fight The Flames With Water Being Poured Into The Building From All Directions. At 11:30am A Large Section Of The South And West Wall Fell In At Notre Dame And Charlotte,Sending Up A Cloud Of Fire And Smoke At The Adelaide Street Side. As Soon As The Wall Had Fallen Every Effort Was Made By The Firemen To Succour Their Comrades. The Police Ambulance Took The Injured To The Hospital To Be Examined. In All 4 Men Died And 9 Others Were Injured. Fire Commissioner Mcgrath Opened A Probe To Ascertain The Cause Of The Fire In One Of Winnipeg'S Old Landmarks |
